An FFL license is definitely an important license if you are interested in selling, buying and dealing with firearms. Even if you are just planning on collecting guns, this license is an essential part of the process especially where curios and relics types (C&R) firearms are concerned.
Acquiring an FFL license and even qualifying for one is tough. If you think qualifying for one is hard, the process of applying and filling up the forms is even harder especially when the government and associated red tape is in the picture. Let’s focus on the FFL requirements. Do you qualify for one?
Do you have the application form?
Generally, there are 2 application types to getting the FFL. These applications are the ATF Form 7 (F 5310.12) and ATF form 7CR (F 5310.16). The Form 7 is the basic federal firearms license application whereas the 7CR form is the application that you’ll use if you want to become a licensed curio and relic collector.
The FFL application form isn’t something that you just fill and submit online-unfortunately. Part of having a successful application is the submission of photographs and fingerprints in order to complete the application process. You can however obtain these forms online or you can the ATF directly to request.
Do you fulfill the basic ffl requirements?
These basic requirements refer to the ones set by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that you must meet in order to become licensed. These requirements are as follows:
1) You’re 21 years of age or older.
2) You’re not prohibited from possessing firearms.
3) You haven’t violated any regulations of the Gun Control Act.
4) You can’t lie on your application, or fail to disclose information on it.
5) You have an approved location or premises that will be used for conducting business or for your gun collection.
Now you would need to confirm what you’ve submitted.
You would need to confirm that:
1) any dealings and potential business is conducted in a licensed location and you have not violated any state or local laws.
2) That you will constantly comply with local and state laws that pertains to your business within 30 days of your approved license application.
3) That you notify your local Chief Police via a provided form that you intend to apply for a license as well as where the licensed location would be.
4) That you can successfully provide secure and safe storage for devices and any firearms that are sold in your licensed location

Now that you have done everything correctly, sent in the appropriate documentation and met all the requirements, you would just have to sit back and wait till you receive a notice saying that your application has been approved or denied.
If this is your first time filling up the form-do it correctly as failing to do so can jeopardize your second attempt at the application. Either it will increase the time spent on getting approved (as you would come across as being suspicious of getting rejected the first time). Applying for an FFL isn’t easy and it’s even tougher if you do not know the FFL requirements as your application could possibly be incomplete without you even knowing. Each FFL application form takes quite some time to be processed and reviewed-that’s why many find it hard to obtain an FFL license. Apart from making sure you meet the eligibility standards, you would also need to know the application process. There is a reason why the requirements are so hard to get by- this is to regulate the possession and distributions of guns. Though it could be tough, the end result is well worth it.
First and foremost in the FFL application would be making sure that you meet the eligibility standards. These standards range from age where you have to be 21 years old and above to apply for the license and you would also need an acceptable record. This record would mean that you must not have any charges from using or possessing any illegal controlled substances. Also, you must not be dishonorably discharged from the armed forces. Basically, you need a squeaky clean record with no police detentions, no felony charges or a jail record with a sentence of a year or more.
Eligibility also includes the information that you have. You must not make any false statements or even fail to disclose information that is crucial in the application- the forms for FFL requirements must be filled out completely and as honestly as possible. This will definitely increase your changes of being approved. The application also places importance in the fact that you neither have nor will violate any of the Gun Control Acts and regulations.
This information is also crucial in applying for a Federal Firearms license. When establishing a business in the buying and selling of firearms, your business must follow federal, state, and local regulations. The establishment must also be equipped with a security system and a secure storage area. Documentation that you have met with all the compliance with all local, state and federal laws should also be shown 30 days after the approval of your FFL application.
More than one copy of your application should be sent in. This is because the first copy goes to the local police department and the second and third copies go to the BATF which is the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
There are many requirements to obtain the Federal Firearms License but tools available in the market make the application process much easier. The BATF website is another good source to get the application process understood much easier.
Fulfilling every criteria regarding the FFL requirements is important and even a properly completed application can sometimes take about 6 weeks to be reviewed and approved, how much longer would an improperly completed form take! The process can take longer if the necessary standards are not followed proficiently. Some good and invaluable advice before you fill in the first blank on the form is to properly understand the instructions and laws of the FFL.
